Today’s edition of FAFO in Ham Radio deals with my weekend expedition to Beacon Hill Park (VE-5540) here in Victoria.
Everything started just fine on this trip – gear was packed and ready to go, I brought all the necessary accoutrements to be successful on 15m and 10m (random wire plus tuner, and 10m vertical dipole). Everything looked good.
The only thing I didn’t do was check the weather…
About 15 minutes into my attempted activation, it started to rain. Then it started to rain some more. I ended up packing down my gear and moving my car to another location, launching a rope into a tree, and getting skunked. Band conditions weren’t exactly ideal, and plus I was getting hungry and needed to get home.
Lesson learned: Check the weather!
